Her actual hospitalization was caused by her "paramour" (pimp) Harry Herer severely beating and trampling her at the rear of the Annex Saloon. Although it was determined that she died of "natural causes", the jury recommended that Herer be prosecuted. ("One man who was at the scene said, 'Men had a more or less chivalrous devotion to these women, a gang of them took Herer in tow, stripped him to his underwear, and told him to run for his life or they would tar and feather him. He did run, and the last they saw of him he was taking to the back alleys like a deer. Officers picked him up later and he stood trial and put in a hitch at Carson City.'"
